Indeed, after five years of negotiations, the South African authorities have just to agree to the lifting of the embargo that affected these products after the BSE crisis. In parallel, negotiations continue to allow, as quickly as possible the reopening of the South African market for bone-in beef.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The announcement of the South African government, which follows that of the government of Vietnam on September 2, and that of 13 August by the Singapore authorities to lift their ban on French beef exports is good news and reinforces the action of the government in the implementation of the international component of the support plan for the French farming.
The annual consumption of beef in South Africa amounted to 892 thousand tons, increasing by 1.2% per year over the last 10 years. Each year the South African imports on average between 30 and 50 000 t of beef. Consumer outlook is positive with an expected increase in consumption of 28% by 2024.
